Art Gallery Fashion Shoot

Over the years I've had the great pleasure to work with the team from Atelier Emmanuel - an amazing hair salon located on Union Square.  They are one of the forward-thinkers in today's market...they take the time and create the stage: location, hair style, make-up, and Look Models!  Out of our dozen photoshoots, they produce wall portraits, flyers and now fantastic blog articles with the photos.

In the past Fashion Photography has never been one of my favorite things to shoot....it's not the model's fault but fashion doesn't have 'feeling' to the scene....it seems fake to me.  I'm used to photographing emotion, intimate scenes of people's lives.

By expanding my interest and experimenting with fashion photography, it's taught me great tools:

  • How to create feeling with creative lighting
  • Stunning ways to pose my non-professional models (brides and grooms)
  • Photoshop techniques I might not use on a simple portrait
  • Studio photo shooting experience.

My advice to other photographers....try something new...you'll probably learn something that applies to what you shoot for your business.

Our photoshoot took place in a cool art gallery on Valencia Street in the Mission:  The Art Zone.  Thanks to Pauline from Atelier Emmanuel I was able to capture some 'behind the scenes' at this shoot.  Felix - you and Pauline ROCKed the set design!

For the other photographers who are interested....We had beautiul natural light from the front window.  For some of the shots I used a large softbox directly above my head and alternated from shooting directly on the model to bouncing it off the ceiling.  I used a large white surface to reflect the natural light.  For some of the more edgy photos, I used a beauty dish to replace the natural light from the left.

Claudia, the hair stylist from Atelier Emmanuel and Julie Dy, make-up artist helped make Leah (our model) look even more beautiful (with a body like that who needs help?)!  Leah you were fantastic to work with!

I hope you all enjoy the photos!

Tara, these are awesome! The lighting concept is ridiculously good and works so well with your model. Well executed!
